US CMA Paper Pattern and Exam Fees

The Certified Management Accountant course (US CMA) is a globally recognised management accounting course offered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). It bridges the gap between business management and financial accounting to help you handle the internal business affairs of a company with respect to the budgets and accounts.

The US CMA exam can be taken during the months of Jan-Feb, May-June, and Sept-Oct. After registering for the exam on IMA’s website, you will be able to register for the exam and make your exam appointment for the same.

The CMA exam is fully computerized. You have the option of taking the exam in one of the following ways.

  • By visiting a Prometric Center
  • By taking the exam online from home with Remote Proctoring

US CMA Paper Pattern

The US CMA course consists of two parts – Part 1 and Part 2. The total marks that can be obtained for each paper are 500 and you need to get at least 360 in each paper to pass.

You will have the freedom to choose the order in which you want to give your paper, meaning you can either choose to give Part 1 and then Part 2 or vice versa.

The time given to solve each exam part is 4 hours. The exam pattern is distinctly divided into two parts –

  • Multiple Choice Questions (100 MCQ questions per part)
  • Essay Questions (two essay scenarios with 5 to 6 individual questions).

The candidate will get 3 hours to solve the MCQs and 1 hour to solve the essay questions. You will need to get at least 50% of the MCQs right to be able to move on to the essay section. Please note that once you move on to the essay section, you can not move back to the MCQs section.

When the results of the exam are announced, the exact marks allotted to each MCQ and essay question are not revealed. The results are declared within 40 days or 6 weeks from the exam.

With consistent preparation, US CMA can be cleared within a time frame of 6 to 9 months. A total of 400 hours of study (on the student’s part) should suffice to clear both parts (200 hours of study per part).

US CMA Exam Fees

The examination fees payable to the US CMA body are different for full-time students and professionals. The US CMA exam fees payable to the IMA body are stated as follows.
